The Flood Group has several sediment monitoring devices placed in useful places around the catchment.
One of these is placed downstream of Alconbury to get a rough idea of the sediment being carried in the main river.
February 27th 2025 (after overnight rainfall)
45g of sediment per tonne of water flowing
66,150 tonnes passed Alconbury that day
Total sediment carried past the sensor approx 2,900 kg on that day
March 10th 2025 (after several days of dry weather)
9g of sediment per tonne of water flowing
14,381 tonnes passed Alconbury that day
Total Sediment carried past the sensor approx 129kg on that day
April 2nd 2025 (after a month of unusually dry weather)
4g of sediment per tonne of water flowing
5900 tonnes of water passed Alconbury that day
Total sediment carried past the sensor approx 59kg on that day
When the brook is running fast it picks up and carries sediment.
When it runs slowly, it drops sediment, some of which builds up and reduces flow.
Our other sensors measure the impact of our ponds and other structures on sediment coming from the land.
