Land drains and culverts divert flood water and fill pond.
Our work along Winwick brook has continued during January. New culverts and field drains now capture water from a 18ha field into a previously mostly dry pond (orange). We plan to create a new small pond (red) during February. This complements the large pond at Palfrey Field which we created in October (purple) and a large pond at Valley Farm, also created during October, further downstream. Many thanks to Russ and Messrs D J Tebbit . Thanks also to Silver Fern for their hard

Restored Pond near Old Weston
During January 26 we restored this medium sized pond near Old Weston. A significant amount of silt was removed. A mostly successful attempt to reconnect field drains to pond was made. Some more thought and tweaking needed though. This pond was previously eutrophic and is now an excellent new freshwater habitat. One 24hr bird-song recording completed as part of our environmental monitoring. Many thanks to Russ and Messrs DJ Tebbit

New data transmitter in Winwick
We have just installed a new data transmitter in Winwick, thanks to Valley Farm. Transmitters like this collect data from our rainfall, soil and flow sensors and transmit it to an internet server in Cambridge. As a result, we can see data without visiting sites. This new transmitter will collect data from the area marked in red on the map. We now have over 80% coverage of the Alconbury Brook catchment.

Geophys investigation is key step in new pond project.
We have an excellent possible site for a rainwater storage pond south of Alconbury Weston. However, there is a very small possibility that there are archaeolopgical remains nearby. A full-on archaeological investigation can be very expensive so we commissioned a Geophysics study, which will show historical soil disturbances. The results of the survey will enable us to decide on making progress with the pond.

Green Light for Rainwater Garden
We have installed rainwater gardens at the bottom of Vinegar Hill, Alconbury Weston. These are intended to reduce surface water flows and increase protection to homes at the bottom of the hill. The 'gardens' divert water from the road into an underground soakaway and then into the drainage system. As well as reducing surface water, the garden filters road run-off before it runs into the brook. We are grateful to Anglian Water, who funded the project and to Breheny, who kindly
